To complement the organic visuals, the music was recorded in Dolby's own presentation studio (designed with adjustable acoustics), and performed by members of the San Francisco Ballet, Opera, and Symphony. A high-speed camera, capable of recording 200 feet of film in three seconds, was used to record this phenomenon not visible to the naked eye.
A special water machine was developed so strobe lights could capture actual raindrops colliding mid-air.
Less than ten percent of the visual elements were created on a computer, and the majority of water images were taken from real photography. Rain inaugurated Dolby's 'organic' trailer theme-real visuals with real music. Rain debuted with the release of Paramount Pictures' Star Trek: Insurrection.
